Need a break from the city? These seven destinations are all within a comfortable drive of Kolkata, so you can leave on Friday evening or Saturday morning and be back by Sunday night.
1. Digha & Mandarmani — beaches (≈185 km)
The classic Bengal beach weekend. Digha is lively with seafood stalls and a long promenade, while Mandarmani is quieter with wide, drivable beaches and resort stays. About 4–4.5 hours via NH-16 and the Kolaghat bypass. Best car: Dzire for couples, Ertiga or Innova Crysta for families.
2. Shantiniketan — art and culture (≈165 km)
Rabindranath Tagore’s university town, with the Saturday Sonajhuri haat, Kopai river, mud-house cafés and Baul music. Around 3.5–4 hours via Bardhaman. Best car: Dzire.
3. Purulia & Ayodhya Hills — hills and dams (≈300 km)
Red soil, forested hills, Murguma and Upper Dam, and the famous palash blooms in spring. Roads in the hills are narrower, so allow 6–7 hours. Best car: Ertiga or Innova Crysta for the ghat sections.
4. Mukutmanipur — Bengal’s second-largest dam (≈230 km)
A peaceful lake at the confluence of the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers, with boating and sunset views from the dam road. Easily combined with Bishnupur’s terracotta temples on the way. Best car: Dzire.
5. Bishnupur — terracotta temples (≈150 km)
Seventeenth-century temples like Rasmancha and Jor Bangla, plus Baluchari saree weavers. A perfect day trip or one-night heritage stay. Best car: Dzire.
6. Jhargram — forests and palaces (≈175 km)
Sal forests, the Jhargram Rajbari heritage stay, Kanak Durga temple and the Chilkigarh area. Close to Kharagpur, about 4 hours away. Best car: Dzire or Ertiga.
7. Maithon & Panchet dams (≈230 km)
Two large dams on the Barakar and Damodar rivers near Asansol, with boating, island views and the Kalyaneshwari temple nearby. About 4.5 hours via NH-19. Best car: Dzire.
Packing checklist for a road trip
